Frequently asked questions
What is Team Vortex?
Team Vortex is a student-led aerospace engineering team at VIT Bhopal University focused on designing, developing, building, and competing with aircraft in national and international competitions. The team brings together students from different technical and creative disciplines to work towards a common engineering objective.
What is SAE Aero Design?
SAE Aero Design is an international student engineering competition that challenges university teams to design, build, document, and operate aircraft according to defined technical and operational requirements. It combines aerospace engineering with practical problem-solving, manufacturing, testing, teamwork, and competition strategy.
What does Team Vortex work on?
Team Vortex works across multiple areas involved in developing and presenting an aircraft. These include Aerodynamics, Avionics & Automation, Structures & Materials, CAD & CAE, Management, and Media. Each department has a specialised role while working closely with the others throughout the development process.
Who can join Team Vortex?
Students from different engineering backgrounds and areas of interest can become part of Team Vortex. Aerospace knowledge is not always required. What matters most is curiosity, commitment, willingness to learn, and the ability to work consistently as part of a team.
Do I need previous experience to join?
No. Previous experience can be helpful, but it is not mandatory. Team Vortex provides an environment where members can develop their skills through practical work, collaboration, experimentation, and guidance from experienced team members. What matters most is the willingness to learn and contribute.
Which department should I join?
The right department depends on your interests and strengths. Students interested in aircraft performance and physics can explore Aerodynamics. Those interested in electronics, embedded systems, or control can explore Avionics & Automation. Students interested in physical construction and materials can join Structures & Materials, while those interested in modelling and simulation can explore CAD & CAE. Management is suited to students interested in leadership and coordination, while Media is ideal for those passionate about photography, videography, design, branding, and storytelling.
What will I actually do as a team member?
Your responsibilities depend on your department and level of experience. Members may work on aircraft design, simulations, calculations, CAD models, fabrication, electronics, testing, documentation, project coordination, content creation, or competition operations. The aim is to provide members with meaningful hands-on experience rather than limiting their involvement to theoretical work.
What can I learn from Team Vortex?
Team Vortex provides an opportunity to develop both technical and professional skills through real project work. Members can gain experience in engineering design, simulation, manufacturing, electronics, problem-solving, project management, communication, teamwork, leadership, and working under real-world constraints.
Is Team Vortex only about competitions?
No. Competitions are an important part of the team's journey, but the larger objective is to create an environment where students can build, experiment, learn, and work on challenging engineering problems. The experience gained through these projects remains valuable beyond the competition itself.
How much time does being a team member require?
Team Vortex is a serious engineering project and requires consistent commitment, particularly as competitions approach. The exact workload varies depending on the department, project phase, and individual responsibilities. Members are expected to balance their academic responsibilities while contributing reliably to the team's objectives.
Has Team Vortex competed internationally?
Yes. Team Vortex represented VIT Bhopal University at the SAE Aero Design International Competition in Fort Worth, Texas, USA, in April 2026. This marked VIT Bhopal University's first-ever participation in an international competition of this kind.
How can companies or organisations collaborate with Team Vortex?
Team Vortex welcomes opportunities to collaborate with organisations interested in supporting student engineering, aerospace innovation, technical education, and experiential learning. Collaborations can include sponsorships, technical partnerships, resources, mentorship, and other forms of support.
How can I contact Team Vortex?
For recruitment, collaborations, sponsorships, partnerships, or general enquiries, visitors can use the contact information provided on the Team Vortex website. Each enquiry can then be directed to the appropriate department or team representative.
